Take a walk for a great cause
3 min read

An eight-kilometre walk, and three daughters across two continents, are at the heart of the “Walk for Bridgy” fundraising campaign.

Since Ian Bridge was diagnosed with leukaemia last year, his family have been with him every step of the way.

And now his daughters are taking it one step further, dedicating a fundraising walk this weekend to their dad.

Kristal and Amanda, along with their friend Kellie from LionessFit, have organised to walk along the stunning George Bass Coastal Walk on Sunday, February 28, to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Their sister Tiffany, currently living in Canada, plans to do an eight-kilometre walk at the same time.

Ian and his family are well known on Phillip Island, running the popular MadCowes Café and Foodstore in Cowes.

“Dad is a very private person and doesn’t want a fuss,” Kristal explained.

“For us, this is a way to express that we are thinking of him and supporting people who have been diagnosed with Leukaemia.”

She said supporting the Leukaemia Foundation was a way to help support other families.

“It’s not necessarily for us. It’s for people who are going to be in the situation that we’re in.”

The Leukaemia Foundation offers practical assistance and support for people suffering from Leukaemia.

This includes everything from access to support groups, information and education, transport, accommodation during treatment and assistance with bills, household duties and childcare.

Right on target

Kristal and Amanda joined forces with their friend and personal trainer Kellie from LionessFit to organise the walk.

“Kellie has been very supportive throughout the whole of dad’s illness,” said Kristal.

“Sometimes we don’t even train, we have a little cry session.”

As well as helping organise the walk, Kellie has been keeping a close eye on her friends, making sure they take care of themselves.

“I always say, if people are under a lot of stress, exercise is a good release,” Kellie said.

“It helps with your mindset and it’s good for your mental and emotional wellbeing.”

When Kristal and Amanda mentioned they wanted to organise a fundraiser, Kellie jumped at the chance to help.

Initially, the trio hoped to raise $4000.

They quickly reached their financial target – “it’s been an overwhelming response” – and are now aiming for $7000.

And dozens of friends, family and supporters are walking alongside them.

Anyone else wanting to join in can sign up online or in person.

“People can pop into the café and we can do it there,” said Kristal.

“There are about 30 people already signed up, but I know more are coming along.

“We’ve got people of all different fitness levels and ages, and friends and family are coming down from Melbourne.”

One of the youngest walkers is Kristal’s nine-year-old daughter Addison, who will be walking alongside her mum.

There’s no limit on the number of people who can take part, although Covid restrictions might mean the walkers have to split into two groups.

The walk will start at Punchbowl at 8am and finish at Kilcunda.

“It is a beautiful walk,” said Kellie.

“If you haven’t seen that part of the coast, it’s definitely one to do. The walk itself is worth it, let alone for such a good cause.”

The family intends to celebrate with a cold drink at the Kilcunda Hotel at the end of the walk.

If you sign up for the walk, you’ll receive an email outlining what you need to bring and all safety and Covid regulations. You’ll also be notified if the event has to be rescheduled due to the weather.

A Walk for Bridgy starts at 8am on Sunday, February 28. Sign up at www.lionessfit.com.au/walkforbridgy or at MadCowes Cafe and Foodstore.
