Make a real difference this winter
2 min read

As the colder months approach, the Bass Coast Winter Shelter is preparing to open its doors and your help is needed.

Run by the Interchurch Council of Phillip Island, this community initiative is seeking dedicated volunteers to support people experiencing homelessness in our region.

The shelter provides a warm meal, safe dormitory-style accommodation, and, most importantly, a place of compassion, connection and care.

Set to operate across June, July and August this year, the shelter will offer up to three nights of accommodation each week in Cowes, thanks to the generosity of local churches opening their doors.

"Volunteers are truly at the heart of the Bass Coast Winter Shelter. The volunteers offer more than just shelter, they provide dignity, warmth and a sense of belonging. It's about giving hope and community during the hardest time of the year," says Project Coordinator Wendy Elson.

Volunteer roles; get involved now

Volunteers are urgently needed now to help with essential preparation and behind-the-scenes roles, including:

  • Volunteer Coordinators
  • Administration Support
  • Accounts
  • Training Support

If you're interested in volunteering for these positions please email wintershetlervol@gmail.com or ring Wendy Elson on 0492 859 637.

When the shelter becomes operational, further support will be needed throughout June, July and August. Winter volunteer roles include mini bus driver and trailer driver.

Volunteers are also needed for three key shifts:

  • Evening (5.30pm — 10pm): Set up, welcome guests, serve dinner, socialise and clean up.
  • Overnight (10pm — 6am): Ensure a safe, calm environment; stay awake through the night with another volunteer; and support guests as needed.
  • Breakfast (6am — 9am): Prepare breakfast, interact with guests, clean and pack up the trailer.

Interchurch Council of Phillip Island will provide volunteer training, helping you feel safe and supported.

Volunteer safety is a top priority. All volunteers will receive:

  • A detailed volunteer handbook
  • Video and face-to-face training covering key topics such as homelessness, trauma, mental health, shelter operations and safety protocols.

Training sessions will be held at the Phillip Island Community and Learning Centre (PICAL), 16 Warley Avenue, Cowes:

  • Monday May 12: 3pm — 5.30pm
  • Tuesday May 13: 10am — 12.30pm
  • Wednesday May 14: 6pm — 8.30pm

Now is the time to get involved and help create a more compassionate community this winter.
