On the waves with Disabled Surfers
1 min read

The annual surfing events hosted by the Bass Coast Disabled Surfers branch return in January and February across the shire.

The events alternate between Inverloch and Smiths Beach, starting on January 19. The events run from 11am to 2pm.

Inverloch events at the SLSC main beach are on January 19 and February 16.

The Smiths Beach events will be held on February 2 and March 2.

The sessions provide a safe and welcoming environment for physically and mentally challenged members of the community and their family and carers to enjoy a day at the beach and experience surfing.

Disabled Surfers have been operating for the past 30 years with 18 branches throughout Australia and New Zealand.

The Bass Coast Branch is in its eighth year of operation and has a busy summer planned for 2025.

The branch is looking for volunteers to help run the events.

Events are free to surfers and volunteers.

There are both land-based or water roles available for volunteers. You do not need to be a surfer or swimmer to help, the surfing is done in waist deep water.

"We provide all the facilities needed including changerooms, lifting equipment, beach wheel chairs and custom made wetsuits to fit everyone," said Bass Coast branch president Paul Hayes.

"All you need to do is come and enjoy the day."

Fresh fruit and a sausage sizzle will be provided, with water available for refills.

Please bring your own sunscreen, towel, water bottle, hat and swimsuit/wetsuit if you have one.

Register (as a volunteer or participant) at Disabledsurfers.org, find the Bass Coast branch, then the events tab.
