Raise a glass for Widow Clicquot

Get your champagne flutes ready. On Wednesday February 26, the Phillip Island Movie Club presents Widow Clicquot at Berninneit, at 7.30pm.

Widow Clicquot is based on the true story of the "Grande Dame of Champagne," Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin (1777-1866) who, at the age of 20, became Madame Clicquot after marrying the scion of a winemaking family.

Though their marriage was arranged, a timeless love blossomed between Barbe-Nicole (Haley Bennett) and her unconventional, erratic husband, François (Tom Sturridge). After her husband's untimely death, Barbe-Nicole flouts convention by assuming the reins of the fledgling wine business and revolutionises the champagne industry to become one of the world's first great entrepreneurs.

Now the champagne is named after her, Veuve Clicquot. The English for veuve is widow.

The story doesn't convert to riveting theatre but does highlight her struggles with a male dominated commerce. However, some critics say that it doesn't go deeply enough into her invention of the gyro palette now known as the Riddling Rack.

We here in Australia know how highly the French hold in esteem their traditional Champagnes methods and legend has it that Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot, on a suggestion from her Cellar Master, Antoine Muller, created a whole new method to clarify her wines, called Riddling in 1811. It was patented in 1864 by a Mr Michelot and sadly not by Madame Clicquot.
