In 2025, the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre will revert to its original name, The Union Theatre, in celebration of the centenary of the original building on this site. As part of the milestone, a year-long program of events will honour its rich history and enduring significance in Wonthaggi's cultural life under the banner of "It's On At The Union".
For the rest of the year, The Union Theatre will host an extraordinary program of events, historical reflections, and performances to honour this historic venue and the spirit that built it. The celebrations begin this Saturday, February 15, with a screening of Strikebound and an exclusive 'In Conversation' with award-winning director Richard Lowenstein. Filmed in Wonthaggi, Strikebound tells the story of the 1930s mining struggle and was originally launched here with former Prime Minister Bob Hawke in attendance. This event also serves as the official launch of the centenary program.
Community groups, local artists, and performers will bring The Union Theatre to life throughout the year, ensuring it remains a vibrant hub for creativity and connection. With many events expected to sell out quickly, I encourage everyone to subscribe to the newsletter at basscoastculturalvenues.com.
As we celebrate all that The Union Theatre has given to our community, we're also looking ahead to the next 100 years. The Arts in Bass Coast Survey, open until February 16, invites residents and visitors to share their thoughts on the future of arts and culture in Bass Coast. Visit engage.basscoast.vic.gov.au/arts-bass-coast to have your say.
A major highlight of the celebrations will be "100 Women 100 Stories", a special International Women's Day event featuring a community choir of nearly 100 women sharing their stories through song.
The event will also welcome Clare Bowditch, a multi-award-winning musician, alongside six exceptional female musicians. Their music will honour the resilience, strength, and diversity of women's experiences.
Over three days in Wonthaggi, the choir will meet, connect, and rehearse, building toward a powerful final concert. I encourage you to be part of this inspiring celebration on Sunday March 16. Come and witness the magic of storytelling through music as 100 voices fill The Union Theatre, reminding us of its vital role in bringing our community together.
As Mayor, I feel privileged to celebrate a century of The Union Theatre enriching our lives. Who knows what the next 100 years will bring, but one thing's for sure: in 2025, It's On at The Union!
