Bass Coast College San Remo Campus held a school open afternoon, on Thursday March 2. Parents, guardians, and community members were welcomed to explore the school facilities, meet staff, and learn more about the school community.
“At our school, we believe that community is an integral part of education,” said campus principal, Emma Harris.
“We know when students feel connected to their community, they are more likely to feel supported, engaged, and motivated to learn. That's why we work hard to foster a strong sense of community within our school.
“To kick off our open afternoon, we hosted an Indigenous Welcome to Country ceremony and smoking ceremony,” Emma said.
“Alvin and Daniel from the Bunurong Land Council led us through the ceremonies. Daniel is a former Wonthaggi Secondary College student. This was a special opportunity for us to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land we learn and play on, and to pay respect to their elders past, present, and emerging.
“We believed that this ceremony was an important way to connect with our local Indigenous community, and to honour the rich cultural heritage of Australia. We hoped that this would be a meaningful and educational experience for all our visitors.”
During the open afternoon, the school also showcased some of the exciting projects and programs that were happening at the school.
“Visitors had the chance to tour our classrooms, chat with our teachers and staff, and learn more about what makes our school community so special.”
A BBQ and cupcakes made by students were enjoyed by many. Visitors got to see the students in action in the Food Technology room.
“We hope our Open Afternoon was a wonderful opportunity for us to connect with our wider community, and to showcase the amazing work that was happening at our school.”
Bass Coast College San Remo Campus will hold an information night for prospective students and families on Tuesday April 4 from 6.30-7.30pm.
