Newhaven College is looking to award Music Scholarships to new or existing students entering the College in Years 5, 7, 9 and 11 in 2024.
Students who are passionate and dedicated to music and demonstrate strong musical potential are encouraged to apply.
Newhaven College’s formidable music teachers and tutors nurture each music student to reach their highest potential. Each student is encouraged to discover their unique expression of music while developing confidence, ease, excellence and enjoyment each step of the way.
The College believes stars of the future are on campus right now, learning their artistry while sharing their talents with other students, their families and the whole community.
Performances
In the first half of 2023, the College has celebrated numerous musical productions, concerts and performances. Individual music students, choirs, bands and ensembles perform regularly at school assemblies, providing students a chance to perform for the school community.
Evening soirees and afternoon concerts and showcases, held regularly, provide the perfect opportunity for music students to perform in front of an audience of peers, parents and teachers.
Whether performing solo or accompanied by fellow students or music tutors, music students learn valuable lessons about managing nerves and other issues around performing to a live audience.
The highlight of Newhaven College’s calendar is the Senior School production.
This year, The Little Mermaid did not disappoint. The production creates a space for students of varying musical abilities to either tread the stage or play in the orchestra, experiencing the wonderment of being involved in such an event. For many, it is their first time on (or under) the stage allowing for personal expression and growth.
Newhaven College’s involvement in South Eastern Independent Schools Association (SEISA) encourages students to broaden their talents across many disciplines.
In May, 27 Newhaven College choristers and instrumentalists travelled to Beaconhills Berwick for the SEISA Music Festival 2024. Throughout the two days, students were privileged to work alongside members of Orchestra Victoria and The Australian School of Performing Arts. The event culminated in a gala concert.
Recently, the Westernport Hotel in San Remo was transformed into an underage rock venue allowing Newhaven College’s VET Music second year students to perform covers and original songs.
For some students, this was their first time performing in a venue outside the College. It really was a special evening with all students rising to the occasion and performing on par with professional musicians. The night at The Westernport also gave the students experience in setting up for the gig, lighting and sound.
Many Newhaven College students and staff become involved in regional productions with groups such as Leongatha Lyric Theatre and Wonthaggi Theatrical Group.
One of Newhaven College’s voice teachers, Kerryn Lockhart, who played the lead role in the recent production of Dusty, is immensely proud of Newhaven College’s passion for music and performing arts.
“Student participation in local productions can be attributed to the embedded performing arts culture that is fostered at Newhaven College,” Kerryn says.
“The dedicated and passionate staff work to train and enable the students to foster and grow their skills and talents in this area of their education. We are so proud of all these amazing students volunteering and contributing to their community in this way.”
