Students in Grade 5/6 at San Remo Primary School have been exploring their family history, in a special study on immigration.
The study culminated in the Suitcase Expo, a show and tell day with a difference, shared with the students’ Prep buddies and the school community, including parents and grandparents.
Students brought in a suitcase filled with information and objects that told of their family’s journey to Australia.
They spoke to different family members to piece together their family history, discovering family traditions, recipes and many stories.
The suitcases included photos and mementos including war medals and century old heirlooms.
Principal Karen Bowker said there was an incredible diversity in the stories, with families originating from Scotland, Poland, England and all across Europe.
“It was a fantastic life-long learning experience for everyone,” she said.
