Make the most of your recycling bank
1 min read

Cowes Recycling Bank accepts all sorts of household waste for recycling and disposal. Whitegoods, scrap metal and batteries can all be recycled for free; charges apply to recycle other items such as e-waste, mattresses and fluorescent light bulbs or tubes.

Household recyclables such as paper, cardboard, plastic bottles and containers, glass bottles and jars, aluminium cans and steel tins cans can all be recycled at no cost – very handy when you’ve had visitors and your kerbside Recycling bin is full!

You can also empty your 120L red-lidded Landfill bin for just $7 ($14 if you have the larger 240L bin) as domestic waste is accepted at Cowes Recycling Bank (up to 0.35cubic metres – or a standard car boot load).

Local businesses can use the Recycling Bank to recycle cardboard for free, which is taken direct to Visy to be made into new cardboard products. Polystyrene can be recycled at Cowes Recycling Bank (charges apply).

Council recently introduced a new drop off service for glass only – by putting glass bottles and jars in a separate bin, more of them can be recycled into new products.

Due to site constraints and safety considerations, trucks are not permitted to access Cowes Recycling Bank. It cannot accept any building or renovation waste – including bricks, asbestos, concrete, tiles, timber and toilets.

Other items that cannot be accepted include furniture, gas bottles and fire extinguishers, tyres, non-mulchable garden waste and soil or clean fill – you can dispose of these items at the Grantville Transfer Station.

Sorting your waste and recyclables into separate types before you arrive helps to reduce waiting times. Customers are required to unload their own vehicles; items longer than 1.8 metres in length or single items weighing over 25kgs may not be accepted – and the site operator’s decision is final. Check before your visit if you’re not sure about a particular item.
