Through to the finals - U14 Red
1 min read

Our finals bound Red team headed on Sunday for what will be two trips in a row to the biggest ground in the league.

The last round of the season had the Red’s versing a flag fancy Wonthaggi, who have mercy’d just about every team in the draw.

Despite missing multiple key players, the intent and work ethic as a team was amazing from the get-go and Wonthaggi soon realised it wasn’t going be all on their terms.

The midfield with Charlie, Zac H, Darcy, Brydon and Ethan T was giving the forwards plenty of options, although Wonthaggi were up to the challenge.

The Dogs did get a reward when Maddy put on an incredible burst of speed from the 50 and kicked truly for a great goal.

Quarter time, Wonthaggi up by only two goals.

Hazza B and Jack E combined for another Island goal early in the second which was a great reward for the incredible midfield work happening.

Wonthaggi were definitely attacking more aggressively and scored some goals, but the back line led by the two Archers, Stewy, Nicka, Teirly, Ollie and Charlie repelled almost everything despite the ball being in Wonthaggi’s forward 50 for a very long time.

The biggest cheer of the day, from both sides, parents, coaches, and basically anyone who saw was saved for Charlie Fishers hanger on the goal line in defence.

What a screamer, one for the memory banks for sure.

The handball chains and gut running combined with a ferocious intent set the tone perfectly for the upcoming final against Leongatha.

In the end a six-goal loss to a very strong Wonthaggi outfit while missing key players was a positive result, the team should be very proud.

Thanks, and great work as always to those who volunteered.
