The Phillip Island Hotel was located west of Thompson Avenue. on the corner of Walpole Street and the Cowes Esplanade. The site was purchased by James Wood in 1869 and a hotel was built named the Woods FamilyHotel. The original building burned to the ground in 1920 and a new building was erected and named the Phillip Island Hotel. The hotel icense lapsed in 159 and the building was destroyed by fire in the early 1960s. The land was later subdivided,
