Who do you want to represent you?

With yet more preselection issues plaguing major parties, Voices for Monash say the movement for engaged local leaders to emerge as well credentialed independent federal MPs continues to grow across Australia.

In the third deselection since last year’s election, Liberal party member and Monash representative, Russell Broadbent has quit the party but will remain in parliament for the duration of his term (see separate story).

What would the residents of Monash like to say in response to this decision, asks Voices for Monash spokesperson Deb Leonard.

Presently strategising for a large community push in 2024, Voices For Monash (V4M) said its members are firmly committed to a new type of democracy, less about politics and focused on climate, integrity, equality and cost of living pressures.

In 2022, Deb Leonard ran as an independent for the seat of Monash, picking up more than 10 per cent of the primary vote.

“The next election could be a very close race – it will definitely be one to watch,” she told ABC radio after Mr Broadbent’s move to the crossbench was announced.

Founded in 2021 by concerned citizens for climate action, integrity and equality, V4M said it is presently focused on cost of living and housing pressures as heard from local residents repeatedly through qualitative and quantitative research and engagement over the last 18 months.

V4M will hold their annual end of year get together at the San Remo Hotel on December 11, from 5pm –7pm for all supporters and those curious to hear more about grassroots community action.

Special guest at the event will be Dennis Ginnivan, who was integrally involved in the formation of Voices for Indi, the movement that saw Cathy McGowen elected as the first independent for that electorate.
