Western Port Ward candidate: Nikole Schellekens
2 min read

As a farmer, small business owner and mother of two young children, my passion for rural communities runs deep. My 20-year career in Social Work and Mental Health, along with a Master's degree and research focused on the Mental Health of Australian Farmers, has reinforced this dedication. My experience as President of San Remo Pre School, co-founder of the Bass Playgroup and past volunteer work with business associations and emergency services has further fuelled my commitment to serving our community.

The Bass Coast is a truly special place with its stunning natural beauty, strong sense of community, and vibrant local culture. I love living here and am passionate about preserving and enhancing what makes it great, which is why I'm running for council - to help make our community even better for everyone. My campaign focuses on several key priorities:

Engaging community
I am committed to serving and representing our community in the Western Port ward, ensuring that our unique needs are heard and addressed. It is vital that council actively consults and engages with our residents on decisions, projects, and plans that affect our daily lives and future. Throughout my campaign, I will emphasise the importance of fostering a council that listens attentively to the voices of our community and takes decisive action to address their needs.

Expanding services
Our rapidly growing ward requires enhanced infrastructure and resources to meet the needs of our residents. This includes improving access to essential services such as GPs, psychologists, libraries, and community groups. I will advocate for the development of these facilities to support our community's well-being and growth. Additionally, I am dedicated to supporting local businesses and promoting our vibrant tourism sector, which are crucial elements of our economy. Improving transport options within our ward will also be a priority to ensure convenient and efficient mobility for all residents.

Supporting our land
I am passionate about supporting those who farm, utilise, and care for our land, recognising them as integral to the fabric of our municipality. Farmers play a vital role in our economy, and their contributions are significant, though their voices have traditionally not been heard. I will actively engage with farmers and those who use our land to understand their needs and challenges, advocating for policies that promote sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship. Protecting our natural environment is paramount, and I am committed to taking decisive action to preserve our waterways, bay, and land resources for future generations.

The Bass Coast shire has shown remarkable resilience through challenges like Covid, storms, droughts, and floods. Our achievements in education, agriculture, and business, combined with our community hubs, are sources of pride. My goal is to build on these strengths to further enhance our region.

This October, I am asking for your vote in the Bass Coast Shire Council elections. With my experience, passion, and dedication, I am eager to work together with you to strengthen and support our community, ensuring a vibrant and inclusive future for all.
