- home to the largest colonies of little penguins, short-tailed shearwaters and Australian fur seals in the world;
- tourist economy worth $619 million annually; with 5000 direct jobs;
- a habitat for 1350 identified marine species, which is three to four times more than Port Phillip Bay;
- a bird sanctuary for 65 per cent of Victoria’s threatened bird species;
- recognised on the world stage: the only wetland in Victoria important enough to be recognised by both the United Nations as a Biosphere Reserve and the International Ramsar Convention for wetland conservation.
