The Movie Teller will transport you

The Phillip Island Movie Club's final screening for the year is "The Movie Teller", on Wednesday December 11 at 7pm at Berninneit

The 2023 Chilean drama was written and directed by Lone Scherfig and based on a bestselling novel by Hernan Rivera Letelier.

María Margarita is the youngest of four siblings in a family that lives in a salt mining town and community in the Atacama desert (Chile) whose lives have been made more difficult by the fall of the socialist leader Salvador Allende. The political turmoil which resulted is shown through exhibiting their hard work in the salt mines

The most special time in the week is Sunday, when everyone goes to the movies to enjoy stories that transport them to other worlds. The girl's parents soon realize that their little daughter has a very special gift, an uncanny ability to tell movie stories. The girl's talent spreads across the town and changes the family's fortune just as the country is being transformed forever.

For the small salt mining community at the heart of "The Movie Teller", their local cinema becomes their most sacred space. It's there, in the packed theatre, that the community comes together every Sunday for a few hours of escapism.

"The film is a beautiful and moving look into how cinema can bring a community together and how art can help to heal broken hearts," said Movie Club secretary Margaret Byrne.

"We will be starting the night earlier as there will be a drink and some nibbles so that members can mix and celebrate our first year at Berninneit.

"The doors will open at 6.15pm and you need to bring your membership card as well as your seat booking. If you have lost your membership ticket you will be required to be checked against the membership list as it is a members' only event."

The film starts at 7pm and members should prebook a seat prior to the night. You can call or drop in to Berninneit and book.

The film runs for 116 mins and is rated M.

"This is the last film for 2024 and we look forward to welcoming you back in late January 2025," Margaret said.
