Police will prepare a report for the Coroner after recovering the body of a woman at San Remo this morning.
The woman was located by the Search and Rescue Squad in waters off Half Moon Bay about 7.30am.
The body is believed to be that of a 43-year-old Officer woman who went missing while fishing with family yesterday.
The death is not being treated as suspicious.
They were fishing near the George Bass Coastal Walk and Punchbowl Rd – a notoriously dangerous spot - when she was swept off the rocks about 10.50am.
Local police were supported by the police Air Wing and Life Saving Victoria in searching for the woman.
At the start of 2020, a fisherman was killed when he was washed off the rocks at Punchbowl Road, the third such death in four months.
Since 2000 there have been six deaths of anglers at Punchbowl, which represents a third of all rock fishing deaths in Victoria in the last two decades.
In October it was announced that two popular San Remo fishing locations - Punchbowl and the rocks at the southern end of Potters Hill Road - would be included in a proposed trial into fishing safety.
The Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) was seeking feedback on a proposal to require fishers to wear lifejackets when fishing at certain high-risk locations during a two-year trial.
The VFA said tragically many rock fishers have died after being swept off coastal rock shelves and the new discussion paper was aimed to improve safety.
VFA Chief Executive Officer Travis Dowling said evidence was irrefutable that wearing a life jacket substantially reduced the risk of drowning if a fisher is swept off the rocks.
Should the trial proceed, the VFA will work with key recreational fishing groups on an education program.
