A multi-million-dollar new retail development in Grantville - including a childcare centre as well as shops, restaurant, and service station - has finally been approved by Bass Coast Shire councillors.
Following a long process dating back to 2021 and including a VCAT case, councillors at the December meeting voted to approve the development at 1517-1529 Bass Highway for the development of a service station, convenience restaurant, retail premises, and childcare centre.
There will be a new service road from Bass Highway and the removal of 0.235ha of native vegetation.
Cr Jon Temby moved an alternate motion to add fencing along the frontage to Grantville-Glen Alvie Road be altered to withstand a vehicle collision.
"As a childcare centre we have greater responsibility," he said, given the centre was on the corner of the intersection.
According to the planning permit, the service station will operate 24 hours per day, seven days a week, while the restaurant and retail area will be in six tenancies across two buildings totalling 756sqm.
The childcare centre will have a capacity for 88 children.
The development proposes a total of 69 car parking spaces.
No objections or submissions were received, however the original planning permit was issued in December 2021 with variations made in subsequent years including a VCAT order from June 2024.
Cr Mat Morgan said he supported a new early childhood education facility.
"We have childcare deserts all over regional Victoria, stopping so many parents and carers from returning to work with waiting lists through the roof," Cr Morgan said.
"I will continue in advocating along with my Greens colleagues in state and federal parliament for a universal system that gives every kid access to properly funded free education."
