Mayor's Message

By Cr Rochelle Halstead

Last week, I hosted a celebration for International Women's Day to honour the remarkable women in our community.

While we have come a long way, there is still more to do in breaking down barriers and ensuring that all women have access to opportunities, particularly in male-dominated industries like trades.

Here in Bass Coast, we placed a strong focus on women in trades, highlighting the incredible work being done to create pathways and support for women entering these essential industries. We were fortunate to hear from Hacia Atherton, a trailblazer in the construction sector, who shared her inspiring journey and insights into how we can attract, support, and retain women in trade-based careers.

We also celebrated the talented female apprentices and tradespeople working right here in our community. From horticulture to roadworks, these women are not only participating in the industry - they are excelling and paving the way for the next generation.

Programs like Girls on Tools, run by the Phillip Island Community and Learning Centre, and initiatives led by the Bass Coast Adult Learning Centre, Coldon Homes, and Capeview Building Products are playing a crucial role in providing hands-on training and employment opportunities. Already, these efforts are making a tangible impact, proving that when education and industry collaborate, real change happens.

Our second celebration of International Women's Day '100 Women, 100 Stories' will be held this Sunday. Hosted by singer Clare Bowditch, this event will bring together the voices and experiences of women in our community through a powerful performance. One hundred women of all ages and backgrounds across Bass Coast will perform songs written by bringing together 100 stories from women.

Just a few tickets are still available, please go to basscoastculturalvenues.com to secure your seat!

Let's continue to support and uplift the women who are forging new paths in every field, particularly in trades, where their presence is crucial to building a more diverse and inclusive workforce. Let's continue to challenge norms, removing barriers, and ensuring that every woman, no matter her background, can thrive.
