As the holiday season approaches, I have been reflecting on the incredible spirit of our Bass Coast community. Our community carols are underway, and our towns are busy with visitors, events and shoppers preparing for Christmas.
In the final council meeting for 2024, councillors unanimously agreed that our communities need urgent action from government in response to coastal erosion and inundation. It was fantastic to see recognition of the work that council has been doing as well as give some certainty to our community of actions that will be taken in future. One of these is a delegation to the Minister for Environment, The Hon. Steve Dimopoulos to advocate for funding.
Keeping the community informed of the work underway, safe beach tracks and our advocacy efforts will be a priority for council. During this busy season, please take care on our roads. Let's look out for one another, drive to the conditions and be mindful of pedestrians, cyclists and wildlife. For those enjoying our beautiful coastline and natural environment, remember to swim between flags.
Bass Coast beaches can be dangerous, however our patrolled beaches keep us safe. Remember to follow the safety signage at all times. The BeachSafe app is a great source for up-to-date information on beach conditions and patrols.
As you prepare for Christmas, I encourage you to shop locally wherever possible. Supporting our businesses strengthens our economy and makes our towns vibrant. I've been inspired by the efforts of local businesses to decorate their shopfronts for the season. These festive displays highlight passion, creativity and a commitment to community. Shopping, eating, and loving local is a way we can all say thank you. Don't forget to vote for your favourite festive facade in our competition!
To those celebrating Christmas, may it be filled with love, laughter, and joy. This time of year, feels and looks different for people. It can be about family and celebration but also can be about loss, stress, anxiety, and uncertainty.
However you celebrate or spend this time of year, I extend my warmest wishes for peace and happiness to you all.
On behalf of my fellow councillors, I wish you all a safe and joyous festive season. We look forward to continuing our working together in 2025.
