Mayor’s Message

By Cr Clare Le Serve

As many of you will know, Council has held a range of sessions to inspire new candidates into Council. There are some remaining sessions being run through the Municipal Association of Victoria in both Leongatha and Morwell. I encourage and welcome all residents and especially more women who are considering standing for Council. If you're interested, I'm more than happy to have a chat. My inbox is open.

Last week I, along with Cr Rooks and Cr Ellis and our CEO Greg Box, attended the Bass Coast First Nations Community Yarn being run by the Bass Coast Gathering Place Steering Committee and Partnership Group held at the Cape Paterson Surf Lifesaving Club. This was a valuable opportunity to learn about the Gathering Place project and also to hear from representatives of the First Peoples Assembly of Victoria, the Elders Voice Group and the Yoorrook Justice Commission.

It was a real milestone for us, filled with moments that reminded us why we believe so strongly in the power of community. As proud members of the Bass Coast Reconciliation Network (BCRN), we're all about bringing people together and building understanding. The day commenced with a smoking ceremony and the sounds of a didgeridoo-it was truly one of the most moving Sunday services I've ever been part of.

Of course, while you are reading this message, it is only a few days to NAIDOC week. We have many events in the region, and I'd encourage everyone to get involved. Be a part of a better future that honours our First Nations peoples and culture.

Last week Cr Rooks attended a wonderful event in Phillip Island. A photography group led by local photographer Peter Fogarty captured thousands of incredible images of our region, with a particular focus on our scenery and the whales. This group has been instrumental in drawing additional eco-tourism and enhancing our area's brands with an increasing range of talented photographers coming to our region to promote our beautiful landscapes. With Canon sponsorship and other collaborations, we are witnessing a vibrant cultural economy that benefits us all.

I am very excited about the Whale Festival. Mark your calendars for this annual event on July 5th which promises to be a celebration of our coastal heritage and a testament to our commitment to environmental conservation. The program is jam packed with activities for all ages to enjoy!

We had great news last week that the Vietnam Veterans Museum will proceed on Phillip Island. Personally, I have donated some items for the museum, including my brother's uniform and other valuable possessions, to our esteemed veterans. This decision from the Minister for Planning to allow this museum to proceed has wide community support and is a testament to our community's spirit and commitment to honouring our veterans' sacrifices.

Our business team continues to deliver support for locals with initiatives like "Meet the Maker" coming up which is fostering entrepreneurship and economic growth in our community - hop onto our website and grab yourself some tickets.
