Locals unite to walk for Pancreatic Cancer Awareness

On Saturday December 14, those who know firsthand the heartbreak of a pancreatic cancer diagnosis will gather at Phillip Island RSL for a community hosted walk in support of PanKind, the Australian Pancreatic Cancer Foundation.

The event, called Put Your Foot Down aims to raise awareness and crucial funds for pancreatic cancer, a disease claiming more Australian lives than ever before.

Each year, PanKind brings the pancreatic cancer community together through their Put Your Foot Down walks, a nationwide series of heartwarming and hope-filled events which unite thousands of supporters.

Dressed in their best purple outfits, they take on a 5km walk to honour those lost and support those living with pancreatic cancer.

On December 14 this year, we will see the inaugural Put Your Foot Down Community Walk in Phillip Island, hosted by local Kirri Harvey, who lost her husband Andrew to pancreatic cancer just three months ago.

A silent killer

Pancreatic cancer is not as rare as many believe. It claims as many lives each year as breast and prostate cancer but receives only a fraction of the funding.

Michelle Stewart, PanKind CEO explains.

"This silent killer is notoriously challenging to detect early because its initial symptoms are vague and non-specific. Without early diagnosis, many patients are diagnosed when their disease is at an advanced stage, leaving them with limited treatment options."

The impact is devastating: eight out of 10 people diagnosed will lose their life within a year, and only 12.5 per cent survive five years or more.

For the thousands of Australians impacted, these statistics are simply unacceptable - and PanKind is determined to change them.

It is the only charity in Australia dedicated exclusively to pancreatic cancer. Its mission is to triple survival rates by 2030 through cutting-edge research focused on early detection and the development of new treatments.

The Put Your Foot Down event starts at 10.30am from Phillip Island RSL on December 14.

Registration for the event is free.
