Federal election
Deb Leonard, independent candidate for the federal seat of Monash, is launching her Phillip Island campaign on Sunday November 24 at the Phillip Island Boardriders Club.
Deb has been endorsed by the Voices for Monash group to represent the community in the federal election.
The event at the Boardriders Club runs from 1pm to 3pm and is open to all to attend.
Deb says her aim is to bring together the community to show how an independent will better represent the community interests and create real change within our area.
"More and more people are realising that party politics isn't working for us. I know our community will benefit immensely from genuine local representation, from someone who knows this area and the people in it," says Deb.
"I've been involved in this community since I was child and am honoured to have the opportunity to represent us in parliament.
"As an independent, I am only focused on our electorate - I don't play party politics. This means I can achieve much more federal funding for the infrastructure and services we need here, and ensure our regional economy thrives," says Deb.
Stephen Mayne, award winning journalist and Crikey founder met with Deb and has thrown his support behind her.
"The independents in parliament have demonstrated they can get things done. They act with integrity and improve legislation without having to follow a party line." says Mayne, who now spends much time at Phillip Island.
"I am confident Deb will bring the same level of integrity and be a strong independent representative for Monash."
Mayne, a political pundit, is optimistic Deb can succeed in her tilt for Monash.
"The numbers don't lie: Monash is winnable for an independent, and I back Deb's chances."

She regularly undertakes legal aid and pro bono work, which she says has given her a unique insight into many of the challenges faced by people in the community.
"Families are struggling to put food on the table, and housing is becoming more unaffordable. As an Independent MP, I can ensure that regional and rural areas like ours are no longer overlooked in decisions to relieve the cost of living and increase housing affordability."
Being an active committee of the Phillip Island Boardriders Club for many years, Deb considers it the perfect venue to officially kick off her campaign.
South Gippsland musician, Phill Beggs of Beggs 2 Differ is providing music for the event, which will also feature guest speakers, food trucks, drinks, as well as lawn games and skateboarding for the kids.
"Politics should be for all the people, and this celebration embraces that concept. This is a family friendly event, and I would love all parts of the community to come along, have a drink, and celebrate how we can make a difference for our electorate," says Deb.
The campaign launch is on Sunday November 24, 1pm - 3pm at the Phillip Island Boardriders Club, 76 Veterans Drive, Newhaven.
"Come and hear how you can help win Monash," says Deb.
