Island Ward candidate: Ron Bauer
2 min read

For the last 4 years it's been an honour to be your representative for the Island Ward.

I have worked tirelessly to address the issues that affect us Islanders.

I have proven that I stand for sensible commonsense solutions. I achieved:

  1. a sensible dogs' off leash run on the beach in West Cowes,
  2. retained the car parking around the proposed football oval in the future recreation reserve,
  3. got the playground in Rhyll finished,
  4. that the proposed bike track from Cowes to Rhyll goes along the headland in and not through the park.

I valiantly fought for and lost twice 5-4 for the red bin to be picked up every week from Christmas to Australia day,

I moved the motion to make council take notice of the parking problems in Cowes.

I vigorously defended the community's right for public question time at council meetings.

If elected, in my next term my emphasis will be to get back to our core responsibilities. Rates, roads, rubbish plus recreation.

In light of the current economic times, we need to redo the council's 10-year plan. Councillors need to construct a four year Council plan that is achievable. I will move that we switch our federal and state advocacy from the Cowes Street master plan to the recreation reserve. Our community needs the aquatic centre and sporting facilities. We must get the sports precinct known as the "Carny site" rezoned now so when the money for the aquatic centre becomes available the site is shovel ready. Not in 10 years' time but now.

We urgently need a new footy/cricket ground, soccer park, basketball courts. As the saying goes, a healthy mind in a healthy body. Also, let's not forget our furry friends, build a proper dog park.

I will move to freeze the waste levy. Our community is struggling with the cost-of-living crisis. Our less fortunate ratepayers are struggling to pay the current fee.

Have one free hard rubbish pick up each year. Not everybody owns a ute or a car with a trailer.

I will again move to have the red bin (land fill) picked up every week from Christmas to Australia Day. It will not create more waste, just pick up what is already in the red bin weekly, not fortnightly. Stop the decay in the heat of summer and stop the stench.

I will lobby both state and federal governments to implement meaningful erosion measures especially for Silverleaves. Sand re-nourishment is not working and retreat is not an option.

I will protect our foreshore environment and habitat from the proposed bike track from Cowes to Ventnor. Some may call the flora on the foreshore weeds, but I can assure you the fauna that lives there calls it home.

A vote for me is a vote for our Island.
