Council election
Island Ward candidate: David Rooks

I'm seeking re-election as an independent candidate.  I've lived on the Island for 24-years and with my wife raised our two daughters here. I continue to be active in volunteer leadership roles connecting me to local community.

Our community wishes to keep our island home a special place to live and visit.

As such I will continue to protect and enhance our natural environment, remain steadfast on maintaining our town boundaries from further residential development and push for a network of pedestrian and cycling paths across the Island. Next term is Phillip Island's time with the completion of the Cowes to Rhyll pathway and a feasibility study on Cowes to Ventnor in line with our Tracks and Trails strategy.

I'm proud, as part of last term's councillor group, we achieved record capital investment, a 125 per cent increase from the previous term. Furthermore, we delivered our much-loved Berninneit Cultural Centre and supported the Phillip Island landscape with the Urban Forest Strategy to re vegetate our townships. Other notable achievements include:

  •   Approval of the Isle of Wight development
  •   Opening of the Cowes Creative Arts Station Space
  •   Upgrades of Rhyll and Cowes boat ramps - Newhaven on its way

My current work role is Centre Manager at Phillip Island Community and Learning Centre (PICAL). It is a richly rewarding role, working alongside 80 active volunteers serving the needs of our community.  Previous to this, I have held roles in event management/tourism, human resources and primary school teaching. These work roles are complemented with higher education studies with a degree or post graduate degree in each sector.

I have a strong connection with the community of Phillip Island and its environment. While my daughters were growing up, I became involved in their community as Chair of Phillip Island Kindergarten, School Council committee and Chair of Scouts. Thereafter, my interests followed with years spent with Phillip Island Tennis Club committee and currently Phillip Island Landcare (chair and committee).

Two years ago, I initiated a new group called Phillip Island Land Alliance. This group, which I chair, has representation from the nine coast care groups on our Island, Landcare and the Conservation Society. It's an important alliance representing community groups who care for the land on Phillip Island and surrounds. The time spent with my local community is very rewarding.

Early in my term of Council, I undertook and passed the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) course. This meaningful and relevant course further developed my skills and understanding of the councillor role.

I care for community and I'm enthusiastic to continue providing experienced and strategic leadership as an Island Ward councillor for the betterment of all.

I seek your vote at the Council Elections October 2024.
