Is your garden edible?

Spring is sprung – albeit in fits and starts – and gardeners are starting to pull out flagging winter vegies, feed their emerging fruit trees and recondition their garden beds with compost and other nutrients.

At Bass Coast Adult Learning (BCAL) moves are afoot to recruit candidates for the next Bass Coast Edible Gardens event, to be held on February 8 and 9 next year.

Event coordinators, Sharon Willcox and Maddy Harford want to hear from people who think they might like to open their garden for the 2025 event.

"An important feature of Bass Coast Edible Gardens is diversity," said Sharon.

"Edible Garden visitors like to view different types of gardens, size of gardens and approaches to gardening. Our aim is to inspire people to grow their own food and enjoy the financial, health, social and (especially) taste benefits!"

Organisers are aiming for 15 gardens spread across Bass Coast shire, from Phillip Island and the Waterline, to Wonthaggi, Inverloch, Cape Paterson and into the Hinterland of Glen Forbes, Almurta, Glen Alvie, Woolamai and all points in between.

"If you think you might like to participate and open your garden next February, we'd love to hear from you", said Maddy.

"You can email us on bceg@bcal.vic.edu.au and we'd be happy to visit and discuss what is involved. You can also go to our website and hit the Opening Your Garden tab for more information."
