Inspiring day in the sand
2 min read

In celebration of Health and Physical Education (HPE) Week, the Year 9 students from Bass Coast College, San Remo, spent an eventful day at the Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club, participating in a variety of enriching and engaging activities.

Throughout the day, students rotated through three sessions focusing on essential life topics and physical activity. Bass Coast College's school health nurses, Suzie Jacobs and Renee Winterton, delivered impactful lessons on sexual health, consent, and respectful relationships. The nurses said these sessions aimed to equip students with valuable insights that will guide them as they navigate adolescence and adulthood.

A college spokesperson said students also had the opportunity to get active, navigating the local environment, wandering the ti tree woodlands and sandy dunes with an "Amazing Race," promoting teamwork and healthy competition.

"The balance of learning and physical engagement was met with enthusiasm from the Year 9s."

During breaks, students relaxed with friends while enjoying morning tea and lunch, accompanied by music and the stunning views from the clubhouse balcony. The peaceful environment offered a perfect backdrop for students to unwind and reflect on the lessons of the day.

The afternoon session featured a heartfelt and inspiring presentation by local businesswoman Rebecca Slavin. Sharing her personal journey, Rebecca spoke honestly about her experiences with drug addiction, navigating difficult relationships, domestic violence, and ultimately, her path to recovery. Her powerful story enthralled the audience, providing a real-life example of resilience and the strength to overcome adversity.

"The event was embraced by all attendees, with students walking away not only with knowledge but also a sense of empowerment," the spokesperson said.

The school extended a special thanks to the local businesses and organisations that contributed to the success of the day by donating prizes and vouchers. These included Girls on Board, Vortex Wonthaggi, Bunnings Wonthaggi, Jim's Bait and Tackle, Island Fight Centre, A Maze'N Things, Phillip Island Ten Pin Bowling, Maru Koala and Animal Park, and Bass Coast Secondary College's Health and Physical Education department.

"Finally, a thank you to Woolamai Beach Surf Life Saving Club for sharing their space and providing the perfect location.

"The day was a fitting celebration of HPE Week, reinforcing the importance of health, respectful relationships, and resilience in the lives of young people."
