Every Christmas Linda Sparkes (president of the Cowes Conference) and her fellow volunteer Vincentians bring smiles to the faces of children and the spirit of Christmas to vulnerable families on Phillip Island and San Remo.
The Covid pandemic has affected all of us in some way and for those families who are food insecure in our community it can mean struggling to buy Christmas lunch or gifts for their children.
The Vinnies hampers are all about providing some joy and happiness at this festive time of the year. Singles and couples receive a food hamper and Coles voucher while families receive a Coles voucher and toys for each of their children.
“We make sure we have the right ages of the children from every family we visit so that we have suitable presents for them,” Linda said.
2020 has seen an increase in the number of people requiring assistance and even families who wouldn’t normally need St Vinnies services are seeking help as they find themselves in a difficult position financially.
Throughout the year the Cowes conference members visit anywhere from 10 to 20 families each week and the annual figure throughout Victoria is 660,000.
The Society raises money from its members, through Parish poor boxes, proceeds from items sold at Vinnies shops, donations from the public and some government funding.
If you can help out with a donation of non-perishable food or a new toy, your gift will help make Christmas a more festive time for so many in San Remo and Phillip Island.
Linda said that they are particularly in need of gifts for 10-15-year old boys this year.
Cut-off date for donations is December 12.
Non-perishable food items and new, unwrapped toys can be left at: Coles, Woolworths, Ray White, Cowes Newsagents, IGA San Remo, Bendigo Bank – San Remo, Bendigo Bank – Cowes and Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School.
