Ghostly glow for these mushrooms
1 min read

Over the past year, we’ve featured an array of strange finds on local beaches, but this one is definitely a land-lubber!

Local photographer Pinky Spencer captured these glowing Ghost Mushrooms recently.

The Ghost Mushrooms, scientifically known as Omphalotus nidiformis, have an eerie glow at night. Usually found on pine stumps and other rotting wood, they can grow as big as 20 centimetres across.

During the day, the mushrooms are a creamy white, sometimes with brown, black or purple shading. But it’s at night when the ghostly glow appears.

If the ghoulish glow wasn’t warning enough, these mushrooms are not for eating. They are poisonous and may cause vomiting and stomach cramps.
