Grantville and Bass Coast residents can celebrate the beautiful Western Port Woodlands with a Family Fun Day at Grantville Hall on Sunday November 24.

With a free concert, woodland walks and face painting, families can bring a picnic or enjoy the sausage sizzle and food fare on offer.

"What better way to spend a fun-day Sunday than celebrating this wonderful forest right at our door on the beautiful shores of Western Port," Save Westernport Woodlands spokesperson Catherine Watson said.

"Bring the family and stretch out on the grass and enjoy the concert, or take a guided Woodlands walk with our citizen naturalists.

"There's plenty for the kids, with free face painting by Sian, featuring woodland animals, and nature arts activities in the hall."

The free afternoon concert features the distinctive sounds of Australia's ukulele master AJ Leonard ("The Downunder String Wonder") and cellist Jenny Rowlands, bluesman Doc White, local singer songwriter Tim O'Brien, Rick Sands from the Gippsland Indie rock outfit The Sand Brothers, and local acoustic trio Keachange.

For those "bitten by the orchid bug", local orchid expert Dick Wettenhall will be signing copies of his new book, The Guide to Orchid Paradise: The Gurdies Nature Conservation Reserve.

Kelly 'Koala' Smith and members of the Gippsland Threatened Species Action Group will be on hand to tell us more about our local fauna.

Woodland walks

Before the concert, visitors and families can join guided walks in the Grantville Bushland Reserve and Gurdies Nature Conservation Reserve. It's a great chance to learn more about the animals, birds and orchids in our beautiful woodlands, right on our door.

  10am Gurdies rain forest. Birds and more. Meet at the car park on the Bass Highway near the Pioneer Bay turnoff. Bring binoculars if you can.
  10.30am Wildflowers and orchids. Gurdies Nature Reserve. Meet at the picnic ground at the end of Dunbabbin Road, off Stewart Road.
  11am Bird walk. Grantville Bushland Reserve. Meet in Shackleford Rise, opposite the Grantville Hall/Reserve. Bring binoculars if you can.

Wear suitable footwear and remember you're responsible for your own safety. Walks are generally 60-90 minutes but you can turn back when you've had enough.
