Extreme fire risk - Boxing Day

With bushfires burning across Victoria, including at The Gurdies, authorities are warning of Extreme fire conditions on Boxing Day.

The Gurdies, Grampians National Park, Bullengarook (near Gisborne) and Creswick are listed as areas of concern.

Authorities say there could be elevated risk for people living, working or holidaying in those areas.

In a media release from Emergency Victoria, a spokesperson said, "if you are in the elevated risk areas identified in the maps, you must have and action a bushfire survival plan. Leaving early is always the safest option to protect your life and your family".

"For anyone who has been provided advice by authorities, continue to follow these directions," the release stated.

"Thursday’s fire danger will be the worst across Victoria since Black Summer in 2019-20.

"Hot and windy conditions will start early from 10am on Boxing Day and continue through the day and night until at least Friday morning.

"If you choose to leave these areas of elevated risk, go tonight (December 25) or no later than 10am on December 26 before the Extreme fire conditions begin. Be sure to let your family and friends know where you are going."

On an Extreme Fire Danger day, fires will spread quickly and be extremely dangerous.

"Many Victorians will have plans on Boxing Day to spend time with friends or family, or travel across the state on their way to or from holiday events, so ensure you are aware of this increased danger before heading out on the road.

"Avoid any travel through bushland areas where possible.

"It is vital to take action to protect your life and property - your life may depend on the decisions you make."
