Candidate statement:
"The Greens are fighting for an end to new coal and gas projects, and a 100 per cent renewable energy grid by 2030. We’re seeking to tackle the housing crisis by building more affordable homes, capping rent increases and reinstating the social housing Levy that Labor scrapped in 2020.
The Greens will reduce the cost of living by capping electricity prices paid for by a windfall profits tax on large energy corporations, and we have a plan to get 1,000,000 homes off gas. We’ll save our native forests which are being destroyed by the Labor Government at the cost of $10 million every year, and we’ll create jobs restoring nature. We’ll also protect the Western Port Woodlands with an Environmental Significance overlay and by placing a moratorium on mining in the woodlands’ corridor.
It’s vital that we supply affordable homes for everyone and stop housing from becoming a speculative commodity. There are people living in their cars and tents right across Bass Coast. Young people like myself struggle to even find a place available to rent let alone pay for it. We have a plan to build 200,000 affordable homes and build public housing for the over 120,000 Victorians on the waiting list.
The major parties have failed to address the housing crisis because they are too close to large property developers and accept their dodgy donations. The Greens are the only party who will actually tackle the housing crisis.
I have grown up in the area and have witnessed inaction from all three levels of government. I have grown tired of the government's failure to promise, act and deliver on all the basic essential needs of our community and our local environment. I have been advocating in the electorate since high school. I was the pimply faced student who lobbied the local council to declare a climate emergency, dragging the former mayor along kicking and screaming (despite the greenwashed narrative he sells now). It’s time for my generation to have a seat at the table where decisions are being made about our future.
It’s hard to go past our beautiful coast. Phillip Island especially has such an incredible and unique environment. The little cute penguins waddling to their burrows, the Eastern Barred Bandicoots who have been brought back from being extinct in the wild, the coastal walks that overlook our rolling sand dunes, where else would you rather be? When I’m not working or campaigning for real climate action, I love filmmaking, bush exploration, video gaming, and I think it's a pretty rare and fortunate position to be in but my job in ecological restoration is something I’ve found real enjoyment and fulfillment in."
