Newhaven College students William Yarranton, Ruben Jungwirth, Bailey Dean, Jasmine Ruffin, Eli Bowker, Alexndra O'Neill, Ashlynn D'Andrea, Georgia Cortney and Emily Kesterton enjoyed some sightseeing as part of the cultural exchange.
Newhaven College students enjoyed their visit to Ibaraki Christian Junior High School, meeting other students and learning about their culture.
William Yarranton, Ruben Jungwirth, Bailey Dean and Eli Bowker took the opportunity to learn ikebana, Flower Arranging.
Newhaven College has had a long running association with Ibaraki Christian Junior High School in Honshu, Japan that started in 2000.
Nine enthusiastic Year 10 and Year 11 students took the opportunity to visit Japan for two weeks in September. The tour offers an opportunity to soak in Japanese culture as well as providing an opportunity to broaden Japanese language skills.
On arrival at the school in Ibaraki, the students were introduced to their host families who welcomed them into their homes. Students were immersed in the Japanese way of life, including visiting onsen (hot springs), local sites and sampling traditional cuisine.
At school, Newhaven College students became involved with classes assisting with English lessons and mixing with the students.
"I was incredibly excited to have the opportunity to go on this year's Japan Tour," said Ruben Jungwirth, one of the participants.
"It was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to dive into Japanese culture and experience their education firsthand. During my time at Ibaraki Christian Junior High School, I enjoyed making new friends with the students and creating countless memories. The program was an unforgettable experience."
The students were accompanied by Newhaven College teachers, Ms Mitsuko Horiguchi and Ms Melanie Flower.
Ms Horiguchi has been coordinating the tours for over 20 years.
"It was wonderful to continue the Japanese Exchange program this year, connecting with our sister school and hosting Japanese students in July, followed by our visit to Japan in September, " she said.
"We are immensely proud of our students, who represented Newhaven College and Australia admirably while adapting to a new cultural environment and overcoming language barriers.
"Through the exchange program, we believe our students have discovered new aspects of themselves and experienced personal growth. Spending time with our students and creating unforgettable memories together has been a joy."
The exchange program has provided valuable experiences, uniting students from various backgrounds and encouraging cross-cultural friendships while promoting mutual understanding. For Newhaven College students learning Japanese, it was an ideal opportunity to practice their language skills.
