Close call at Colonnades
1 min read

Three young swimmers had a lucky escape after being swept out by currents at The Colonnades on Sunday.

The father of one of the boys swam out and with the help of three local surfers, managed to bring them all back to safety.

Leading Senior Constable Julian Wildenberg from San Remo police, said it was a good reminder to only swim at patrolled beaches.

“The Colonnades is not a safe swimming beach,” he stressed.

“Fortunately the father was a triathlete, so he was able to reach the boys. A helicopter was sent to assist, but it wasn’t required.”

The three boys were examined by paramedics at the scene, then cleared to go home with their families.

LS Constable Wildenberg thanked the local surfers for coming to the aid of the boys.

“The identity of one of the surfers is known to us, but the other two had left the beach by the time police arrived. We’d like them to contact San Remo police, so we can thank them,” he said.

The incident is a stark reminder of the dangerous rips and currents on the beaches at Cape Woolamai.

On Christmas Eve in 2018 a father and son drowned at the same location.

Life Saving Victoria reminds everyone to always swim at a patrolled beach, and to visit beachsafe.org.au and download the beachsafe app.
