Blue-ringed octopus warning

As reported in the Advertiser in January, blue-ringed octopuses have been spotted on Silverleaves beach.

Earlier this year a barefooted walker nearly trod on one of the one of the world's most venomous marine animals and now another walker last week spotted two within 100 metres of each other at the same beach.

According to paramedics, the blue-ringed octopus bite is very venomous.

A bite may be painless but can cause paralysis, and the person may stop breathing.

Apply a very firm bandage around the bite and then apply a second bandage over the whole limb. Make sure the bandage is not too tight and cutting off the circulation.

Call Triple Zero (000) for an ambulance or take the patient to a hospital as quickly as possible.

If the person stops breathing, they will need cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

The octopuses are normally found in rock pools, but these recent sightings have been washed ashore, still alive.

An angler suggested the octopuses headed easterly with wind and weed movement adding they had seen them washed up in Rhyll also.

It s another timely warning to beach goers heading into summer.
