Wonthaggi Youth Brass finished just four points behind the winning band at the recent Victorian Bands League State Championships.
Wonthaggi Youth Brass and Wonthaggi Citizens' Band both performed to great acclaim at the recent Victorian Bands League State Championships, held at the Hawthorn Arts Centre on July 28.
Wonthaggi Youth Brass, with members ranging from 11-20 years old, are all current and former students from local schools including Bass Coast College, Newhaven College, Wonthaggi PS and Korumburra SC.
They performed three works in the Junior C Grade section, scoring 182 points from a possible 200, finishing just four points behind the winning band, Richmond Youth Brass Band.
Proud musical director Nick Beale said that he was "very happy with the way WYB played, particularly with many new players playing at their first contest".
Wonthaggi Citizens' Band (WCB), comprising of local musicians ranging from school students to retirees, performed a hymn, march, own choice and test piece in the Open C Grade section.
Conducted by Craig Marinus, they placed fifth out of nine bands in a highly competitive section which was won by Whitehorse Brass.
Band members were also well represented in other grades, with Stuart Alexander performing with Darebin City Brass (A grade champions), Caleb and Noah Robertson performing with City of Dandenong Brass Band (2nd placing in B grade), and Victoria and Alex Wilson performing with Sale City Band (D grade).
Your next opportunity to see the Wonthaggi Citizens' Band perform locally is at this weekend's "Wallace and Gromit- with live brass band!" at the WUCAC on Sunday August 11. WCB will play a set, including some of their pieces from the recent state championships, before current Victorian A grade champion band Darebin City Brass take the stage to play the soundtrack for "Wallace and Gromit – The Wrong Trousers".
Don't miss this opportunity to see a great show for the whole family.
