The Federal Government has announced $8 million funding to the Cowes street masterplan, which will see Thompson Avenue one-way and car spaces removed.

Federal Regional Development Minister Catherine King today (Thursday) chose Cowes to announce $400 million in Australia-wide projects.

The funding, though, comes at a controversial time.

All seven Island Ward candidates in the council election – (which will see results announced next week) – were critical of the Cowes street masterplan, saying funding should instead go to the proposed sports hub on the corner of Phillip Island and Ventnor roads.

Ms King said the funding would “boost the economy by better connecting the foreshore with retail, dining and accommodation”.

“We are investing $8 million for the Cowes Foreshore Precinct which will improve the experience for visitors,” she said.

Thompson Avenue North and The Esplanade will undergo one-way traffic upgrades and improved landscaping, Ms King said.

The funding announcement comes in response to Bass Coast Shire’s 2024 Federal Advocacy Priorities report, which requested $25 million total investment for the Cowes masterplan, also listing $12 million investment to deliver stage one and two of the project.
