RAAF leader to speak at San Remo service
1 min read

A retired RAAF Squadron Leader who saw active service in the Solomon Islands and Afghanistan will deliver the address at this year’s San Remo Anzac Day commemoration.

The service is at the Cenotaph at 11am.

John Turner moved to the seaside town about 18 months ago.

He joined the RAAF in 1975 as a radio technician (air) and worked on Macchi trainers and Mirage jets. He was commissioned as an engineering officer (electrical) in 1986 after completing an engineering degree at Newcastle University.

His engineering officer tasks included air traffic control communication, navigation and radar systems.

John retired as Squadron Leader to RAAF Reserves in 1995, but returned to active RAAF service in 2007 for another four years. He served in Afghanistan in 2009 and 2010.

Newhaven College Captain Niamh Moore will give a young person’s perspective of the meaning of Anzac Day.

Students from San Remo and Newhaven Primary Schools will also be represented.

Cr Bruce Kent will lay a wreath on behalf of Bass Coast Shire Council and there will be an opportunity for others to do likewise. Poppies will be provided for anyone who wishes to lay one at the Cenotaph or by the adjacent Lone Pine tree that was planted on behalf of the San Remo community in 2015 to mark the centenary of the Anzac landing.

The Cenotaph is on the foreshore opposite the supermarket.

Afterwards, a special morning tea will be hosted at the San Remo Hotel.

The commemoration is organised by a small group of local residents under the auspices of the National Vietnam Veterans Museum subbranch.
