Residents of BlueCross Grossard Court, Joan Everest and Elaine Manders, are the best of friends and have been for more than 15 years, even before they moved to the residential aged care home.
They first met at Palm Lake Resort Phillip Island, for the over 50s.
“I lived there for 21 years and Joan was there for 15 years, so we’ve been friends and neighbours for a very long time,” explained Elaine.
Joan recalled that for many years when they lived at the resort, they used to play cards.
“Elaine lived just a few doors down and we would often play just with the two of us or in a group of four,” Joan said.
“So, when Elaine moved out of the resort and into Grossard Court 12 months ago, I was pleased to be able to join her four months later.”
Now at Grossard Court the pair play cards each day without fail between 10am and 11am. Canasta is their game of choice which as many people know is a game of strategy, cunning and luck and these two pros play to win; they love their daily Canasta ritual.
‘We love it here, it’s just so easy and we don’t have to do any cleaning or cooking. We just sit back relax and play cards," says Elaine.
Joan quickly agrees.
“Oh yes, it’s just so lovely here. A real sense of community too, with the staff and the other residents.”
Others from the resort have also moved into Grossard Court. Elaine explains that the group all share a table at mealtimes.
“We call it the laughing table because we are always giggling away. It’s a lot of fun,” she said.
After cards, then its onto extra activities on offer with others in the community. The ladies like to get involved and there are plenty of ways to keep busy and entertained.
“I like the sing-alongs. I might make a mess of the songs, but I do enjoy the singing,” said Elaine.
“It’s always wonderful when the entertainers come and sing for us or play instruments. It really makes our day.”
Joan and Elaine are also fans of bingo, carpet boules and indoor golf, enjoying each day with old and new friends at Grossard Court. When the weather is good, they put up their hand to join the bus trips to get out and about and see different sights.
Joan and Elaine are happy, clearly still choosing a very active life. Part of that good life is their friendships and saying yes to all the different things they can still do.
“Our friendships are really important. It keeps us all smiling and motivated,” said Joan.
Residence Manager Anne Main said all the group activities at BlueCross Grossard Court are specifically designed for residents like Joan and Elaine to socialise, exercise and stay sharp.
“It is really important to us that we can facilitate friendships and fun, which all contribute to a very vibrant culture,” she said.
“And residents don’t need to have known each other previously. We provide plenty of opportunity for them to get to know each other and connect, as well as have their own space if they need it.
“That’s why the ladies play cards every day. It’s not just something to do. The memories made and bonds forged is a priceless gift at any age.”
