Students dazzle in Shrek The Musical

“What makes us special makes us strong”

Vibrant costumes, amazingly talented performers and professional production standards provided a dazzling show for musical enthusiasts young and old at Newhaven College’s production of Shrek The Musical over the weekend.

Director Lauren White, and Musical Director Matt Goss led a dedicated group of students to bring to life Shrek The Musical in a performance that was enjoyed by all.

The production’s lead cast included Laura Vivian as Princess Fiona, Dean Lyle as Shrek, Coco Hosken as the Dragon, Michael Furniss as Lord Farquaad and Lucas White as Donkey, who were superbly supported by an all-singing, all-dancing ensemble.

“Shrek The Musical was a roaring success,” Principal Tony Corr said.

“Colourful, vibrant and entertaining, it was a wonderful choice of musical to showcase the exceptional talents of our Newhaven students.

“I would like to congratulate the Director, Lauren White, and Musical Director, Matt Goss, for leading and inspiring such a high quality performance. The show’s themes of acceptance and embracing diversity are so relevant for our times. Shrek The Musical was truly a celebration for our school community.”

Director, Lauren White speaks to the Shrek catch cry, “What makes us special, makes us strong”.

“I knew as soon as I read those words in the libretto of Shrek that this would be the perfect choice for the Newhaven College school musical,” Lauren said.

“Choosing our musical every year is always a difficult task. We aim to find the perfect blend of education, entertainment, and a strong message to resonate and  impact on audiences.

“It seemed to me that this was the year where we needed to make people laugh a little louder, feel a little deeper and think a little harder about acceptance, friendship, tolerance, love and kindness.

“Directing this production of Shrek The Musical has been an amazing journey, with many bumps along the way to test our strength as a cast,” she said.

“It has been a joy to watch the students create such vivid characters and tell this beautiful story with passion, love and commitment.

“Today’s youth have an amazing power to make an impact on our society and watching this group of young people embrace and convey the important themes and messages of this piece has truly been inspiring!” she said.

Lauren said it was a privilege to work alongside Matt Goss to bring the musical to life.

“His passion for music education is second to none and we are so fortunate to have his expertise in musical direction for our College productions.”

Lauren also thanked Shontelle O’Connor, Newhaven College’s Performing Arts Trainee for her endless support and her mum, Robyn Rumbelow who gave up her time to help costume the cast.  She also thanked the students, staff and parents for their support and for being so committed and enthusiastic.
