Rural Australians for Refugees

Refugee Week2021 is celebrated in this week beginning 20th June.

In a time of unprecedented numbers of people displaced because of conflict, racial and political persecution, famine and floods, countries of the world struggle to offer them refuge.

Phillip Island Rural Australians for Refurgges (RAR) will join with the West Gippsland Libraries on Friday 25th june to mark the week of celebration and concern, and to acknowledge the contribution to Australian culture of people from diverse backgrounds. Every Friday morning RAR members gather in the town square to ring the Harmony Bells. They will again ring the bells before an event in the library at 11am.

In late April RAR launched a fund-raising appeal for $18,500 to fund the resettlement in Canada of one refugee currently trapped in Nauru or PNG (and nowhere to go). We were overwhelmed with the generosity of the Phillip Island community who donated nearly $20,000.  Anything over our target goes towards resettling one more refugee through the Refugee Council of Australia.

THANK YOU TO YOU ALL!

The Phillip Island RAR meets at 10am on the last Tuesday of the month in the hall of St. John's Uniting Church. We welcome new members. Enquiries to Lesley Oakley 0432 163 694

We also invite you to join us in Wonthaggi to celebrate Refugee Week 21.

South Gippsland RAR will be screening a compelling film; The Scattered People, of how music opens the heart, and has the power to heal and connect cultures.

The story of Iranian asylum seekers Mas and Saha and how they joined the Scattered People - a group of musicians who found them. They are joined by a swag of high profile musicians who also believe in the power of music.
