The Phillip Island Movie Club will open its 2023 season on Thursday February 23, with the Australian film “How to Please a Woman”.

The Director/Writer is Renee Webster. It is her first feature film and was released in 2022.

Gina (Sally Phillips), is a middle manager in a company called "Lifeline Liquidation" (an apt metaphor for what's about to happen). She and her husband are basically platonic roommates.

Gina is not feeling fabulous. She has lost her job and feels stuck and frustrated in a passionless marriage.

She has always lived life on the sidelines, that is, until she is met with a ground breaking business opportunity of converting a team of well-built moving guys into well-built housecleaners, and to take control of her life.

“How to Please a Woman” is a precarious, often hilarious and revealing journey into the vulnerable world of what women really want and how hard it can be to get it right.

The club selected this film because it is Australian, was made during Covid and is Renee Webster’s first full length film.

One of the Producers is Judi Levine, also the producer of Falling for Figaro, the film screened in November.

The other Producer is Tania Chambers who is the Director of Feisty Dame Productions in WA and has happily agreed to send comments for this film.

Although this film is essentially seen as a comedy, the intention of Renee Webster was to raise an important issue, that can be very difficult/uncomfortable for some people, in a way that makes it less confronting.

A warning, some people might find this challenging. Margaret Pomeranz describes this film as “mischievous and charming!”.

The film will be screened at St Philip’s in Cowes and starts at 8pm. The doors open at 7.15pm for drinks and nibbles for the first film of the season. Please bring a wine glass or cup for tea or coffee.

Entrance is by membership only, as this is a requirement of Film Societies for buying the rights to screen the film.
