Irish best for latest movie club screening
1 min read

This month’s screening for the Phillip Island Movie Club is Irish film “The Quiet Girl”, on Thursday, March 30 at St Philip’s in Cowes.

Directed and written by Colm Bairead, his narrative feature debut “An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl)”, is an adaptation of Irish author Claire Keegan’s celebrated story “Foster”.

The film premiered at the 72nd Berlinale where it won the Grand Prix of the International Jury of the Generation Kplus programme. It opened the 2022 Dublin International Film Festival, winning the Audience Award and the Dublin Film Critics’ Circle Award for Best Irish Film.

“This film is exquisite,” said Margaret from the film club.

“It is heartbreaking and a privilege to watch such a well-crafted film. Nine year old Cait is lovable, vulnerable, isolated and does not fit in with her clan.

“This is a reoccurring story over the years in Ireland, where large families are so poor they have to send a child away in order to survive.”

The film is made in the Irish language and has English subtitles. It is rated PG and plays for 94 minutes.

The film starts at 8pm and the doors open at 7.30pm. Please bring a cup for tea or coffee.

Entrance is by membership only, as this is a requirement of Film Societies for buying the rights to show the film.

There is a 2024 waiting list and any queries or applications for a membership form can be made at phillipislandmovieclub@gmail.com

The next film will be “The Duke” on Thursday, April 27.
