Creative textiles on display

The Textile Art Group, a section of ASPIR (Arts Society of Phillip Island Region) is having their first Gala Exhibition at the new Creative Arts Station on January 18 and 19.

The art on display will showcase weaving, felting, sewing, embroidery, spinning, lino cut, string making, and fabric basketry, with many items available to purchase.

There will be plenty to see with many displays and live demonstrations across the weekend of many of the techniques used to create the items at the exhibition.

The free exhibition at the Creative Arts Station, 119 Settlement Road in Cowes runs from 10am until 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, January 18 and 19.

Long history

The textile group has been meeting regularly for many years and the people who participate have common creative interests and are passionate about the preservation of textiles as an artform.

Some notable achievements of the group have been:

  • The commemorative wall mural created for the 150 years celebration of Phillip Island. It was presented to Bass Coast Shire Council in 2018.
  • The PICAL wall mural representing the many activities and the natural environment of Phillip Island
  • Best in Show at the Bendigo Wool and Sheep show in 2023.

The group meets twice a month to work on group projects, individual works and participate in workshops.

At the meetings, they also prepare work for the annual Easter ASPIR Art Show, which includes a textiles section.

Various members have been successful in local art shows including at Cowes, Pakenham, Tyers and Bendigo.

Some members have also staged successful exhibitions around the area, in Melbourne and overseas.

Become inspired and perhaps join the group. No experience required.
