Art that heals

The Phillip Island Movie Club presents American independent film Ghostlight at Berninneit on Wednesday January 29, at the new time of 7.30pm.

Ghostlight (2024) focuses on a construction worker drawn into a production of "Romeo and Juliet," and is a drama about traumatised people healing themselves through art. It's messy in the way that life is messy. But there's a purity and earnestness to what it's doing that's increasingly unusual in American independent cinema.

Co-directed by the Chicago-based filmmaking team of Kerry O'Sullivan and Alex Thompson (O'Sullivan wrote the script), the story focuses on a family played by an actual family of working actors.

The father, Dan (Keith Kupferer), is a construction worker. He lives in a suburban neighbourhood with his wife, Sharon (Tara Mallen), and their teenage daughter, Daisy (Katherine Mallen Kupferer). This is a troubled family. You can see that long before the movie reveals all the pieces of their trouble and lets you examine them.

It is a film that reminds you of the unifying power of great storytelling and brings together topics such as grief, love, forgiveness and community in an emotionally engaging manner.

Please note the film begins at 7.30pm, the movie club's new starting time for 2025.

This screening is for movie club members only, and you must have your membership ticket and your Trybooking receipt to enter.

Tickets will be issued from 6.45pm. Please arrive in enough time to collect your ticket and purchase drinks or food.

As there will be 260 people all collecting tickets and purchasing food or drinks prior to 7.20pm so the film can start on time, please factor this into your arrival time.

Ghostlight is a comedy/drama and plays for 115 mins.
