Visiting students join with Coast Care
1 min read

Recently, thirty year 12 students from Damascus College, Ballarat joined Ventnor Coast Care to remove polygala from its shoreline.

Polygala, or myrtle-leaf milkwort is classified as a weed in Victoria, due to its invasiveness.

The students met at Grossard Point lighthouse and walked down to Elizabeth Cove where there is an abundance of the noxious weed.

“Polygala is a significant woody weed for our area, and without intervention it threatens to take over areas of our beautiful coastal reserve,” said Judy Glover, President of Ventnor Coast Care.

Originally from South Africa, it produces purple and white pea shaped flowers. Its seeds are easily spread, so its removal from local gardens is highly recommended.

The students worked hard for two hours clearing the weed.  Smaller trees were pulled out and larger trees were cut off at the base.

“It’s difficult work and with the average age of our Coast Care group over 50 it was a pleasure to have so many young bodies helping out,” Judy said.
