With National School Tree Day on July 28, students and staff at Our Lady Star of the Sea got an early start on helping the environment.
The school successfully received grants through Kids Teaching Kids and Landcare, which enabled them to undertake a couple of exciting projects.
“The first project was working with the Bunurong Land Council to obtain permission to use indigenous plant names and educate our students about how the plants are utilised for bush tucker, medicine and equipment such as fish traps,” said Principal Cathy Blackford.
“The second project was holding a community planting afternoon on July 19.
“From 1.40pm until 3pm we planted around 800 indigenous trees, grasses and shrubs and spread lots of native mulch.”
Each class was allocated a planting area and the Grade 5/6 students led the planting.
“We had heaps of support from members of our school community including mums, dads and grandparents,” Mrs Blackford said.
