Seaweed Sally star of the school
1 min read

The Level 5/6 students at Our Lady Star of the Sea were immersed in the wonders of the Southern Ocean thanks to a partnership between Ecolinc, Seaweed Sally and Coastcare Victoria. The initiative aims to deliver marine and coastal education programs to primary school students across Victoria.

The visit commenced with Marine Biologist Josie and her amazing Seaweed Sally experience. Ranging from whale bones and baleen, to elephant snails and sea stars, the students were in awe as Josie described the different animals in her display and the rockpool touch tank.

Josie's passion for the marine ecosystem was clear and the students learned how they can help protect the rockpools and keep the beach litter free.

The students then created 'fishing fleets' with Ecolink Assistant Director Nicole. The students learnt about sustainable fisheries, catch limits, by-catch and marine national parks through an interactive fishing game.

Nicole noted how impressed she was with the student's ideas to protect our fisheries for the future. Ideas included increasing marine national parks, inventions of bycatch sensors and reviewing current fishing methods.

Staff and students alike were thrilled to participate in the program and are looking forward to putting their new knowledge into action.
