Jordan Crugnale MP visited Our Lady Star of the Sea recently and was taken aback with all the wonderful changes across the school that have happened over the past year.
She was greeted by Principal Catherine Blackford who took great delight in talking about all the spaces for the children to learn great life skills and connect into the natural environment.
“The last time Jordan visited there were only four classrooms and now there are eight with a flexible library space, dedicated art and music rooms and an internal lift for accessibility,” Cathy said.
“In addition, there is also an inside and outside kitchen, a formalised oval with running track, natural play areas and an undercover space for students to play sport and run around.”
Jordan said, “this school is going from strength to strength and the setting is just beautiful, welcoming and inclusive. All the ingredients to have a positive learning experience and where students can be their best.”
Dropping into each classroom, talking with students as well exemplified all this and Jordan was super thrilled seeing so much art and colour adorn every surface.
“The walls, shelves, ceilings, pavements are filled with such creative expression in all forms which shows just how engaged the students are and all the staff are to be absolutely commended for their dedication, care and support for their entire school community.”
Jordan was very happy to join in on a music lesson where the children were practising their drumming skills before they went outside for the djembe drum lesson in the new sensory garden.
Principal Cathy Blackford went on to say the new front entry with the garden and rock seating is a great place for parents to sit and have a chat while they wait for their children at the end of the day.
The state government have a dedicated funding stream for capital works for non-government schools.
Both Cathy and Jordan were extremely pleased to see the partnership bring to light such innovative learning spaces in such an environmentally friendly considered way.
They thanked the entire project team, builders, landscapers and contractors who are still on the job which when complete in early 2022 will include a bird-watching area, carpark, mosaics and a working pizza oven.
