Newhaven College students raise money for Landcare
2 min read

Newhaven College students have raised $7,150 to support Bass Coast Landcare.

The school said it aims to nurture students who are passionate about environmental issues as well as developing and supporting our local community.

This year, the Year 12 Cabinet set about raising funds for Bass Coast Landcare Network (BCLN).

The work of the Landcare Network in developing a community of knowledgeable land managers caring for and appreciating the wonders and benefits of a healthy, productive landscape, inspired the Cabinet in their fundraising efforts.

“Our charity of choice for 2022 was born from our year level’s passion for the environment,” said Year 12 Captains Coco Hosken, Jack Papas, Laura Vivian and  Orlando Kane-Gillard.

“Discussions at the start of the year had everyone buzzing around with ideas of how Newhaven College could save the planet. Although the excitement was high, this goal was, of course, wildly unattainable.

“So as a Cabinet, we did some research into how to help a little closer to home. Landcare’s vision ‘to see all Australians actively caring for the land and water that sustains us’ instantly appealed to us.

“Through the hard work of the Year 12 Cabinet, Middle and Junior Captains, as well as the enthusiastic involvement of the whole school community we managed to raise $7150, through discos, raffles and dress-up days.

“We are proud of our College Community’s support of Landcare.”

Newhaven College’s Year 12 students attended their final All School Assembly last week.

This was the perfect opportunity for the school to applaud the hard work of the Year 12 Cabinet, and the efforts of the whole school community.

Dave Bateman, Executive General Manager BCLN was thrilled to receive the cheque from School Captain Laura Vivian during an all-school assembly.

“Bass Coast Landcare Network is very excited to receive the $7150 dollar donation from the Newhaven College fundraising efforts. Bass Coast Landcare will use the funds to plant an extra 3500 plants through our Biolinks program.

“I am absolutely amazed and thrilled with the size of the donation and look forward to getting the Newhaven College kids out and about planting. The donation will have a lasting impact on our landscape by creating Biodiverse corridors for our native wildlife.

“Well done to all the kids, parents and teachers involved in their fundraising efforts,” Dave said.

The whole school community got involved in the fundraising, with dress-up days, a Junior School disco, raffles and even the College staff organised a cake baking competition.

Jason Scott, Head of Senior School, is proud of this year’s Year 12 cohort “Hats off to the Cabinet and their amazing fundraising achievement.”
