The 2023 year has started with much excitement at Newhaven College with students returning to school over Wednesday and Thursday last week.
Teachers and support staff started back earlier, with three days of collaborating, professional learning sessions and planning for the year ahead. Everyone was ready and excited to welcome students back to campus.
The greatest excitement was the arrival of the 2023 Preps.
With three separate classes for the first time in college history, the Preps were welcomed with a parade, greeting every Junior School student with a fist bump, handshake or wave. Although there were some nerves amongst the College’s youngest students, they all settled in very quickly.
New Year 7 students enjoyed meeting their teachers, connecting with new friends, and exploring their new school environment.
Year 5 students were excited to spend their first day in Middle School and quickly settled into their classrooms.
The 2023 Year 9s have strapped on their hiking boots and pulled on their ranger-style uniforms ready for a year of adventure at the special Year 9 Environmental Centre. Everyone is looking forward to hearing about their escapades over the coming year.
A special Forum Day was held for the 2023 Year 12 cohort.
Designed to prepare students for their last year of school, the specialised program forms the basis for a successful year. Educational Neuroscientist Jared Cooney-Horvath presented “How to use your amazing brain” – a workshop on how to improve learning practices.
Students enjoyed a delicious lunch with Principal Mr Tony Corr and Head of Senior School Mr Jason Scott in the College Pavilion.
The Year 12s finished the day with a House focused pastoral care activity with Year 7 students, including sharing stories and walking around campus. Year 12 can be daunting, but Newhaven College staff provide excellent support and pastoral care throughout the year so students can achieve their best outcomes.
The College grounds have had a facelift over the summer break, with the Newhaven College grounds and maintenance crew working to stain decks and facades, create new gardens, install art installations and commence work on a trail around the school grounds. The school campus has never looked so good.
College Principal, Tony Corr welcomes those new to the College community including 10 new and returning staff.
This new group of staff and teachers truly represent the broad range of employment opportunities provided by Newhaven College. The group includes Matthew Jackson (PE, Maths), Louise Larcombe (Maths, Science), Sam Foura (Humanities, Science), Jenna Harman (AFL Trainee PE), returning teacher Jess Moed (PE), Marc Tillotson (Maths, Science, Biology), Joanne Savona (Library, English), Melanie Redmond (Student Support), Tahnee Brown (Head of Wellbeing), Luke Kennedy (Infrastructure), Ash Ellis (Grounds) and Sarah Taylor (English, Humanities).
To top off the week, College leaders and staff welcomed parents and guardians with drinks and canapes on Friday evening, providing the perfect opportunity to show off the new Performing Arts Centre as an incredible venue for the school and the community at large.
Newhaven College still has limited places available for 2023 in Year 2, Year 4, Year 9, Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12.
